Sir Anthony McCoy, the 20-times Champion Jump Jockey, took time out of his busy schedule to meet ex-England and Arsenal striker Ian Wright and his racehorse, the aptly named Born To Finish at the training yard of Jeremy Gask in Stockbridge near Andover.
McCoy was back in familiar territory as he donned his riding gear to put the four-year-old gelding through his paces on the gallops at the training yard, as well as chatting to Arsenal’s former record goal scorer about the fun and excitement of racehorse ownership.
Wright is part of the ownership syndicate Crowd Racing Partnership who own Born to Finish, and have enjoyed significant success, including a hat trick of wins in less than two weeks that started on New Year’s Eve last year at Lingfield Park and was completed at Kempton Park on 11th January.
Ian Wright said of his ownership experience: “It’s my first go at ownership and I’m in the group with people and it’s really nice when you’re with everybody they’re all so excited about it because all have a little piece of him. A hat trick of wins was unbelievable.
“I just want the horse to be ok, whether it wins or loses I’m not really too fussed, but the fact is you just feel a nice bond with him. It’s been such good fun. Seeing AP on my horse is a beautiful thing for me.”
Sir Anthony McCoy said: “It was great riding Ian’s horse Born to Finish. He’s a good horse, with loads of speed and it’s great that Ian’s had so much success with him. We could do with seeing more lads like Ian Wright in getting involved in racing, so hopefully we’ll see more of him on the racecourse.”
