Racing To Profit Aiming To Raise The Roof On The Westwood

If the roof has to be replaced on the grandstand at Beverley Racecourse it’s more than likely going to be down to members of the Racing To Profit Syndicate.

Their enthusiastic celebrations have become a regular feature at the Yorkshire venue as they descend on the Westwood to watch their course specialist Coolree in action.

And they’ve certainly had plenty to shout about.

Coolree, trained by Sam England, has won three times at Beverley this season, taking his course tally to five victories. He hasn’t finished out of the first four in a dozen visits to the track.

Josh Wright, co-founder of Racing to Profit, said: “Amy Murphy bought him at the sales. I think everyone else must have gone to lunch as he only cost €8,000.

“She got a win out of him but by the time Amy moved to France it had become obvious he loved Beverley, so we moved him north to Sam England, as he’s not the best of travellers.

“We build his whole year around Beverley. Next season is already mapped out. He’s won the race in mid-May for three years in a row, so that’s always the early-season plan.

“When he gets to Beverley you can see from his demeanor he knows where he is. His shoulders rise and he kind of struts around.

“The climb to line at Beverley really helps. When others stop he doesn’t – he puts his head down a keeps going. He’s a relentless galloper and a real trier – he really wants it.

“He’s the perfect syndicate horse. You want a horse who runs regularly, tries hard and is competitive.

“When you turn up at the races and you know he’s going to be there or thereabouts and it makes everyone a bit more excited.

“We usually have about 15 owners cheering him on every time he runs at Beverley. They look after us very well and we go so often the staff know who we are now. The prize money is very good there, too.”

Coolree is one of 12 horses currently running in the increasingly familiar green-and-yellow colours of Racing to Profit.

The syndicate prides itself on bringing racing fans together to experience the thrill of owning racehorses and building a community around that shared passion.

Josh added: “We put a lot of emphasis on the social side. We’ve been going just over five years and I hate the idea of anyone turning up to the races not knowing anyone.

“We’re blessed with our owners – we’ve got a proper mix. We’ve got owners in their mid-20s all the way through to retired people. There’s every background and occupation you can think of – everyone is brought together by their common love of horseracing.

“When you’re celebrating victories all boundaries drop – you’re just in the moment. That excitement of winning can’t be matched.

“We’re all living for moments of excitement and happiness – a winning horse brings it all to life.

“Celebrating together is one of the best things about syndicates. That shared joy when you’re bouncing around in the stands hugging.”

Racing To Profit is another example of how fans can get involved in ownership without breaking the bank.

For relatively modest amounts, they can experience the thrill of owning their own share in a racehorse with Racing To Profit.

Josh said: “There’s no other sport like it. The idea that you’re shaking the hands of the jockeys and trainers, you’re getting as close as you can to the action.

“We organise yard visits to see behind the scenes, talking to the staff and seeing how everything works, there’s no other sport where that’s possible for a fan.

“Syndicates have a role in opening up the sport and that access cannot be underestimated.”
