They are still re-living the nine-year-old’s courageous success in the Grade 3 handicap chase at Chepstow over Christmas but naturally have their sights set on more big targets, including the world’s greatest steeplechase.
“It would be amazing to think he could run in a Grand National,” says Burgess of their now 149-rated star. “It would have to be a wet spring as he’s at his very best on testing ground, but that can happen.
“Aintree probably isn’t on the agenda this year but could be next season. We’re giving him a nice break before possibly running him in the Grand National Trial at Haydock in February or the Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter in March.”
Iwilldoit gave Sam Thomas his biggest success as a trainer when supplementing his winning re-appearance in another handicap chase at Chepstow at the beginning of December.
“Sam has done a great job with him and we leave the plans up to him,” adds Burgess. “He deserves all the credit because he was talking about the Welsh National long before we even imagined he’d run in the race,” he adds.
Due to Covid regulations in Wales at the time, the majority of the gelding’s shareholders had to watch him gallop to a nine-length victory under Stan Sheppard from the comfort of their living rooms, but certainly plan to be cheering him on trackside when he next appears.
“It’s been a dream come true for the syndicate who are just everyday people,” adds Burgess, “and Chepstow have kindly invited us all back. Among those involved are a fitness instructor, a marketing manager and a civil servant who all have one thing in common – they just love horses and racing.
“Between them they own various shares but some pay as little as £79.95 a month which is fantastic for a horse of a lifetime like him,” he says.
Iwilldoit, who has won five of his 17 starts, is one of 14 horses on Diamond Racing’s books and is leased from breeder Stan Brown, who offered them the horse as an un-raced youngster. They also have an un- raced five-year-old with Thomas called Diamond Monarch who is by the same stallion, Flying Legend.
Golden Emblem, the winner of races at Market Rasen and Wincanton for Neil Mulholland, is another notable member of the team and shareholders are looking forward to Cometh The Hour making his debut for Rebecca Curtis. The gelding is a half-brother to smart hurdles and chase winner The Romford Pele.
New to their ranks is the Mick Appleby-trained Flat horse Babe Alicious whose shareholders include one of Burgess’s near neighbours Jane Parr, a lifelong racing fan who looked after the great Desert Orchid as a foal.
