Racing Club With A Difference Takes Centre Stage At Cheltenham

GO GO CHICAGO, who will carry the colours of The Good Racing Co, will launch a new era for racing clubs when he takes part in a syndicate parade at Cheltenham’s two-day Showcase meeting this weekend (21st and 22nd October).

Trained by O’Brien McPherson Racing, he is the first of eight horses that will race to raise vital funds for worthwhile causes – in his case Racing Welfare and Racing to School – and membership costs only £60.

The Good Racing Co is the brainchild of businessman and racing enthusiast Phil Hawthorne, the man behind the successful Burrow Seven Racing Club that was spearheaded by former Rugby League star Rob Burrow and raised over £100,000 for research into motor neurone disease.

“That helped me see there’s a huge potential for racing to raise money for charity,” he says. “With The Good Racing Co, we aim to redefine racing as an all-inclusive sport that motivates and excites people for many different reasons, especially racing for good causes.

“We believe there’s more to winning than coming first. With our new racing club, when people buy a membership to a horse in our stable they can share in making a difference and improving the lives of those in need.

“Go Go Chicago is raising money for two highly respected racing charities, and we expect most members to come from the racing world, but our longer-term ambition is to help attract new audiences to the sport as we introduce horses racing to many different causes with horses in different stables across the country.”

Go Go Chicago, a bay gelding by proven sire Shirocco, is trained near Cheltenham by Fergal O’Brien and Graeme McPherson and Fergal adds: “We’re both excited to be joining The Good Racing Co. We hope to unite the racing community to raise money for more worthy causes, while having fun along the way.

“We’ve seen what can be collectively achieved through the success of Burrow Seven, and we’re confident the racing community will once again make us proud of their generosity and support for good causes.”

Racing Welfare supports the workforce of British horseracing, offering professional guidance and practical help to current and retired racing staff and their families while Racing to School aims to inspire young minds through the provision of free, interactive educational events for schools.

Dawn Goodfellow, CEO at Racing Welfare, says: “The sentiment and ambition behind The Good Racing Co is fantastic. Membership offers an affordable way for people to get involved with British horseracing, while also helping to give back to the sport at the same time.”

Racing to School’s John Blake adds: “Our charity delivers the sport’s largest community programme and we are ambitious to work with partners to reach more young people to support their education and career aspirations. The support of the Good Racing Co is invaluable.”

The £60 membership to Go Go Chicago includes a welcome pack with a metal annual member’s badge and a lapel pin badge, a photograph, car sticker and membership certificate. Additional features include an exclusive online members’ content hub and regular updates about the horse’s development and the two charities.

Members will also be given the opportunity see Go Go Chicago race and to enter prize draws throughout the year to visit the horse at his yard in Gloucestershire. Visit www.thegoodracing.co for more information.
