He has his eyes on a Festival double with Tolworth Hurdle hero Tahmuras and improving mare Love Envoi following their successes on a memorable day for the Noel Fehily Racing Syndicate at Sandown earlier this month.
Fehily, who celebrated six Festival winners before retiring from the saddle in 2019, plans to run the Paul Nicholls-trained Tahmuras in the Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and Love Envoi in the Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle.
“It’s very exciting,” he says. “We have 26 owners in the two horses who will both head to Cheltenham with leading chances in their respective races. We can hardly wait.”
Fehily, who runs his syndicates with former weighing room colleague David Crosse, celebrated the biggest day of his new career after Tahmuras delivered a breakthrough Grade 1 success in the Tolworth, rounding off a high-profile double at Sandown.
That was initiated when the Listed mares’ hurdle went to Harry Fry’s Love Envoi who landed the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham last season before finishing second at Grade 1 level at Fairyhouse last April.
“Sandown was our biggest day by miles,” Fehily says. “We’d only had one runner in a Grade 1 before so to win with only our second was a massive day for the syndicate. All the owners came with their friends and families for a big day out and we got a great result, which doesn’t happen every time you go racing.”
Crosse adds: “They are both very talented horses. We had every belief in Tahmuras going into the Tolworth but there was no pressure. It was different with Love Envoi because she had top class form in the book but didn’t let us down.
“To find horses like these has been massive. You need flagship horses to help the syndicates grow. We set out to be competitive from the start and there are owners involved in both these horses who were never involved in racing before, so it’s brilliant.
“Every syndicate is made up of 10 shares and Noel and I go and find the horses ourselves. If one of us likes a horse and the other doesn’t, we don’t buy it. It’s a formula that seems to be working well,” explains Crosse.
Fehily admits that watching is much harder than riding, however. “I’ve been there, done it and now I’m quite happy to watch,” he reveals, “but I’m much more nervous now. Watching them is a lot harder, especially when you have an odds-on shot with all the syndicate owners there.”
Tahmuras cost £68,000 and had already won a Listed novices’ hurdle at Haydock Park before taking the step up in class in his considerable stride in the Tolworth. As well as the Supreme, he also holds an entry in the Grade 1 Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham.
With only one defeat in nine career starts, Love Envoi re-appeared to win a valuable handicap hurdle at Sandown in December before taking her Listed prize there over a longer trip. That success took her prize money haul beyond £175,000 – some return for a mare who cost just £38,000.

Noel Fehily Racing Syndicates was established in July 2019, essentially when Noel retired from his race riding career, which included a prolific number of winners. David Crosse has since retired from the saddle in December 2020 and between them, Noel and David are able to use their extensive experience, knowledge and horsemanship to specialise in National Hunt syndicates.
