Stallion career beckons for syndicate star Shouldvebeenaring

Syndicate owned star Shouldvebeenaring could be destined for a second career as a stallion following his latest top-level performance in the Group 1 Qatar Prix de la Foret at Longchamp on Sunday (1st October).

The Richard Hannon-trained son of Havana Grey chased home French-based Kelina and Ralph Beckett’s odds-on favourite Kinross in the seven-furlong feature, finishing well under Sean Levey to be beaten less than two lengths.

Named by Middleham Park Racing shareholder Chris Thomson, who invested into the colt instead of buying his fiancée an engagement ring, he is likely to race again before possibly taking up stallion duties in the new year.

The Group 2 Challenge Stakes at Newmarket in October is a likely target for the tough grey following his third in Paris on Arc weekend and his big-priced second in the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock Park last month.

He is also a dual Listed winner, having won the Champion Two-Year-Old Trophy at Ripon and the King Charles II Stakes at Newmarket in May, but is now poised to give his shareholders an exciting new opportunity if full or part-ownership is retained.

“We’ve been in conversation with several studs about standing Shouldvebeenaring but nothing has been confirmed at this stage in respect of where he may go or whether he will be sold,” says Middleham Park boss Tim Palin.

“We would like to further enhance his CV before he possibly retires to stud so the Challenge Stakes looks a good opportunity.”

Ambitions plans for the rest of 2023

Middleham Park also have ambitious plans for their promising two-year-old The Coffee Pod, who won a York novice on his third career start and is likely to target Black Type in the Group 3 Horris Hill Stakes at Newbury.

He shares his name with a café belonging to part-owner Bob Patrick, who is one of 22 shareholders in the Richard Hannon-trained son of Acclamation.

And Pattern success is the aim with the company’s star filly Lexington Belle, a triple winner this year for Alice Haynes who was only narrowly denied in a valuable sales race at Goodwood at the end of September following success at Thirsk, Wolverhampton and Salisbury.

“She could go for something like the Oh So Sharp Stakes at Newmarket but we may look for similar opportunities in France or Germany,” adds Tim, who is also looking forward to the new National Hunt season with top class mare Marie’s Rock.

“She’s enjoyed a summer break with Ann Duffield up in Yorkshire and looks tremendous,” adds Tim, whose flagship jumper signed off in the spring with a gallant second in the Grade 1 Liverpool Hurdle to Sire Du Berlais.

“She’s cantering back at Nicky Henderson’s in readiness for two big targets next season. We’ll probably start in a Grade 2 at Newbury but our principal aims are the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot and, of course, the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.”
