Star Sprinter Regional Inspires Dubai Project

Star sprinter Regional’s success in the Middle East has inspired owners Future Champions Racing to launch an exciting new international syndicate.

As the seven-year-old is prepared for the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot this month, Danny Clark has revealed plans for a new horse with leading Dubai trainer Bhupat Seemar.

“Taking Regional to Dubai earlier this year was such an amazing experience for everyone involved that we decided we’d like to give our shareholders the chance to spend more time out there. We had about 12 owners with us who enjoyed great hospitality including a breakfast with the stars event, an owners’ lunch and a party on the run up to World Cup night in April.

“Now we plan to buy a horse to go in training for a winter campaign with Bhupat, who has twice been champion trainer in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The chance to combine a holiday with watching our horses run in Meydan will be very exciting.”

Regional, who could yet return to the Dubai Carnival himself next year, finished a close third to fellow British raider Believing in the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint and will attempt to go one better than last year’s gallant second when he runs at the Royal Meeting.

“Ed Bethell, his trainer, thinks he’s got him better than ever at the age of seven which is incredibly exciting,” adds Danny, who runs Future Champions Racing with fellow racing enthusiast Byron Hubbard. “He came so close to beating Australia’s Asfoora, who will be taking us on again, so we’re very hopeful – especially if the rain stays away.

“We’re also expecting to come up against Believing, who did beat us at Meydan but was behind us when we won the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock two seasons ago and again in last season’s King Charles.”

The syndicate will be represented by around 30 shareholders and friends at Royal Ascot and Danny is determined to look the part if they’re lucky enough to end up in the winner’s enclosure. He and Byron are both being fitted out for the big day by a renowned London tailor.

Regional has become one of the most successful syndicate-owned horses in recent years, taking his prize money haul to over £700,000 with that performance in Dubai.

He also has a Listed win on his CV as well as seconds in the King Charles, the Group 2 Greenlands Stakes in Ireland and the valuable Dukhan Sprint in Qatar. His third in Dubai followed a similar placing in the 2022 Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood.

Not bad for a gelding who was snapped up from Richard Fahey for just 3,500gns at the July Sales at Tattersalls four years ago. “He’s been the horse of a lifetime for so many people and continues to thrive in the care of his excellent young trainer,” adds Danny.

“After Ascot we will consider the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York before heading back to Haydock for the Sprint Cup. Then we have the option of taking him back to Dubai to run alongside our new horse. The owners who have already signed up can hardly wait.”
