Noel Fehily, who experienced the euphoria of winning six times at the Cheltenham Festival as a jockey, is hoping to re-live those glory days as a syndicate manager when his star performers Love Envoi and Tahmuras step into the big time.
Noel Fehily Racing’s Love Envoi staked her claim for the Grade 1 Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle on the opening day with a resounding success in a Listed race at Sandown Park in January. Trained by Harry Fry, she is no stranger to Festival glory, having won last season’s Grade 2 mares’ novice hurdle.
On the same afternoon Noel’s Tahmuras confirmed himself a live contender for the Grade 1 Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle by completing a hat-trick of wins this season for Paul Nicholls in the Grade 1 Tolworth Hurdle. He also holds an entry in the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle the following day.
Middleham Park Racing’s Marie’s Rock came back from a long absence to win the Grade 2 Relkeel Hurdle at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day and looks set to take on Love Envoi in her attempt to land a second consecutive Mares’ Hurdle, though the Grade 1 Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle remains an option.
Her trainer Nicky Henderson also has Thurloe Thoroughbreds’ popular grey Buzz in the Stayers’ Hurdle. The nine-year-old, who races to raise funds for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, hasn’t raced since sustaining a career-threatening injury two winters ago.
Meanwhile, Paddy Power Gold Cup hero Ga Law looks set to take his chance in the Grade 1 Ryanair Chase on day three of the Festival. Jamie Snowden’s seven-year-old, who runs in the colours of the Footie Partnership, is also among the entries for the Gold Cup and the Grand National.
Long-standing syndicate company Owners Group have high hopes for Stage Star in the Grade 1 Turners Novices’ Chase or the Plate Handicap Chase on day three. The Paul Nicholls seven-year-old has won three of his four starts this year, including a handicap chase around Prestbury Park in January.
Owners Group also have the reliable Hacker Des Places with Nicholls, who is targeting the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle or the McCoy Contractors County Handicap Hurdle following success in a similar contest at Cheltenham in January.
The County Hurdle could see the re-appearance of Harry Fry’s Gin Coco, who is owned by David’s Partnership. He ran a stormer to be second in the Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham’s November meeting following a novice win at Newton Abbot.
On the agenda for Theatre Glory is another of the week’s big betting handicaps, the Coral Cup. Nicky Henderson’s six-year-old was successful in a Listed mares’ novice at Cheltenham last spring and underlined her credentials by winning a similar race at Warwick in February.
The Coral Cup could be the destination for Henderson’s Captain Morgs who took his owners the Albatross Club into the winner’s enclosure at Cheltenham in December when he won a three-mile handicap hurdle. He’s also among the ante-post fancies for the Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle a day later.
The Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Challenge Cup Handicap Chase on day two is a target for Chris Gordon’s Aucunrisque, who could switch to the smaller obstacles in the County Hurdle on Gold Cup day. Second in the Wayward Lad at Kempton over Christmas and the winner of the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury last time, Goodwin Racing’s seven-year-old certainly has his options open.
And the main objective for Fergal O’Brien’s Greyval is the Grade 2 Ryanair Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle, though she’s also in the Triumph Hurdle, too. The Oakley Partnership’s filly looked a smart prospect when taking a Listed juvenile hurdle at Doncaster in January.
